Before you set off

  • Fill up with fuel in Rawanduz or Soran — stations thin out towards Choman.
  • Download an offline map; signal is patchy in the valley.
  • Carry your ID — there are checkpoints on the road.
  • Aim to arrive in daylight; the mountain road is unlit.

The Hamilton Road

The Hamilton Road was built between 1928 and 1932 by the New Zealand engineer Archibald Hamilton to link Erbil with the Iranian border through the Rawanduz gorge. It is still one of the most dramatic drives in the region.
